Our Mission · In Honor of Steve Irwin

A last refuge for the most misunderstood animals alive.

The Steve-O Crocodilian Sanctuary is a non-profit rescue on 100 acres in Winters, California — beside the Vivarium Crocodylus park. We give nuisance and rescued crocodilians a permanent home, and we do it in the spirit of the man who taught the world to love them.

Why We Exist

Every year, crocodiles and alligators are killed simply for being inconvenient — too big, too close to people, in the wrong place at the wrong time. Owners surrender animals they can no longer keep. Agencies seize animals with nowhere to send them. For most crocodilians in these situations, there is no second chance.

We built the Steve-O Crocodilian Sanctuary to be that second chance. On 100 acres of refuge, we provide lifelong care for rescued crocodilians — what we intend to become the largest rescued crocodilian collection anywhere in the country.

We named it in honor of Steve Irwin because his whole life was proof of a simple idea: people protect what they love. The park next door, Vivarium Crocodylus, is where the world comes to learn and to watch the demonstrations. The sanctuary is the quiet place where the rescued ones are safe, forever.

What We Stand For

Rescue over everything

We exist for the animals who ran out of options. If we can give a crocodilian a safe, dignified life instead of a death sentence, we will.

Dignity, not spectacle

No shows, no stunts, no performing. The animals here are not entertainment — they're survivors, and they get to live like it.

The wildlife warrior spirit

Steve Irwin made the world fall in love with crocodiles. We carry that forward — turning fear into respect, one rescue at a time.

Rescue. Refuge. Respect.

01

Rescue & Refuge

We take in the crocodilians no one else will — nuisance animals, surrenders, and confiscations that would otherwise be euthanized — and we give them a permanent home for the rest of their lives.

02

Meet the Residents

From rescued crocodiles and alligators to caimans and rarer crocodilians, our residents make up what we intend to be the largest rescued crocodilian collection anywhere — every animal a second chance.

03

Observe, Don't Perform

There are no demonstrations at the sanctuary. You come to watch these animals live naturally, in a beautiful and quiet setting built for them. The shows and the bulk of the education happen next door at Vivarium Crocodylus.

04

The Wildlife Warrior Spirit

We're named in honor of Steve Irwin — the man who taught a generation to love crocodiles instead of fear them. Every rescue here is a way of keeping that spirit alive.

05

Protect the Wild

Protecting these animals means protecting the wild places they come from. We pair rescue with light education and conservation partnerships, because saving an animal and saving its world are the same fight.

How You Can Help

We're a non-profit — rescue costs real money, and these animals live for decades. Donations, sponsorships, volunteers, and visits are what keep the gates open and the lagoons full.

Every animal saved is a second chance.

We're a non-profit — donations, sponsorships, and volunteers are what keep these animals fed, housed, and safe for life. Help us give them the home they deserve.
